Barkston combines environmental and economic With new sustainable driveway product
Barkston Plastics Ltd, one of the UK's most comprehensive and innovative plastics companies, has launched a new product designed to meet the Environment Agency's requirements for porous paving; and provide home-owners with an economically sound, environmentally friendly, sustainable solution to off-road parking, all while maintaining a bit of greenery.
'Sustainable Driveway' is an easy to lay, interlocking plastic grid system which allows new driveways to be constructed in a matter of hours. The 'honeycomb' structure of the product enables it to be filled with grass, gravel or chippings, providing an eco-friendly alternative to asphalt or paving. As the product is self draining, the expense and delay of planning permission is not required and its use can contribute towards increasing soil moisture levels – benefiting street trees and carbon absorption levels.
The new addition to Barkston's product range contributes towards the Environment Agency's strategy to reduce flood risk as it does not create surface water run-off issues and impact on local drainage. The product has been developed out of plastic waste that has been 100% recycled in the UK from 100% UK generated plastic waste that would otherwise have gone to landfill; making investment an environmental as well as economic decision.
Tim Kiernan, Managing Director of Barkston, said: “ Sustainable Driveways is an excellent addition to our product range as it supports our ethos of trying to tackle UK plastic waste with UK solutions. It offers a very viable solution to individuals looking to resolve parking issues in an environmentally friendly, sustainable fashion which also keeps their garden looking good. Our plastic grids allow grass to grow through so homeowners can still maintain their greenery.
“The system is lightweight for installation but can stand up to 250 tonnes per meter square, it is easy to maintain, weatherproof and 100% recyclable.. It also reduces the carbon footprint of any project and because of these combined benefits we are expecting great interest in the product from a range of home owners and alternative markets as well.”
